A holiday is, in the English-speaking world, a day designated as having special significance for which individuals, a government, or a religious group have deemed that observation is warranted. Examples of types of holidays include:

  • Official or unofficial observances of religious, national, or cultural significance, often accompanied by celebrations or festivities
  • A general leave of absence or vacation from a regular occupation for rest or recreation
  • A specific trip or journey for the purposes of recreation or tourism

People often take a vacation during specific holiday observances, or for specific festivals or celebrations. Vacation or holidays are often used spent with friends or family.

A person may take a longer break from work, such as a sabbatical, gap year, or career break.

Holiday

The word "holiday" comes from the Old English word hāligdæg. The word originally referred only to special religious days. In modern use, it means any special day of rest or relaxation, as opposed to normal days off work or school. The word derived from the notion of "Holy Day", and gradually evolved to its current form.

Vacation

In the United Kingdom, vacation once specifically referred to the long summer break taken by the law courts and, later, universities—a custom introduced by William the Conqueror from Normandy where it facilitated the grape harvest. In the past, many upper-class families moved to a summer home for part of the year, leaving their usual family home vacant.

What are the most important Jewish holidays to acknowledge?
Q. My sister is converting. I am nonreligious, and I send Easter cards to my close Christian friends/family. She will be my first Jewish family member, and I was wondering what holidays I should mark with cards? I assume I should send my standard "holiday" greeting to them before Hanukkah, but should I send a card for Yom Kippur or any other holiday?

A. That's very kind of you. My own sister's support throughout my conversion was of great value to me. I couldn't have gone one without the love of my family. Yes, Chanukah acknowledgements are nice, though I wouldn't call it an important holiday. It's still nice to be included in the winter happenings either way. Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year and should definitely be recognized. As for other important holidays, try joining her in celebration on Succot, perhaps, when we make parties inside a crazy shed/tent, or for Shavuot when we eat all dairy meals (oooh, the cheesecake!).

How different are the holidays going to be this year?
Q. In the past year I've been blessed with 2 beautiful grand sons, watched my daughter go through an ugly, unexpected divorce, and lost a few loved ones. I'm also watching family and friends have to reorganize their lives because of the economic situation. My holidays are going to be different in a lot of ways. Are things much different for you this year?

This should include airfare , accommodations and maybe a few discounts on attractions or car rentals. This is one way to bundle everything together and save money.
