From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Basketball is a team sport in which two teams of five players try to score points by throwing or "shooting" a ball through the top of a basketball hoop while following a set of rules. Basketball is one of the most popular and widely viewed sports in the world. A regulation basketball hoop consists of a rim 18 inches (45.7 cm) in diameter and 10 feet (3.05 m) high mounted to a backboard. A team can score a field goal by shooting the ball through the hoop during regular play. A field goal scores two points for the shooting team if a player is touching or closer to the hoop than the three-point line, and three points (a "3 pointer") if the player is "outside" the three-point line. The team with more points at the end of the game wins, but additional time (overtime) may be issued when the scores of both teams are the same. The ball can be advanced on the court by bouncing it while walking or running (dribbling) or passing it to a teammate. It is a violation (traveling) to walk with the ball, carry it, or to double dribble (to hold the ball and then resume dribbling). Various violations are generally called "fouls". Disruptive physical contact (a personal foul) is penalized, and a free throw is usually awarded to an offensive player if he is fouled while shooting the ball. A technical foul may also be issued when certain infractions occur, most commonly for unsportsmanlike conduct on the part of a player or coach. A technical foul gives the opposing team a free throw. Basketball has evolved many commonly used techniques of shooting, passing, and dribbling, as well as specialized player positions and offensive and defensive structures (player positioning) and techniques. Typically, the tallest members of a team will play "center", "small forward", or "power forward" positions, while shorter players or those who possess the best ball handling skills and speed play "point guard" or "shooting guard". While competitive basketball is carefully regulated, numerous variations of basketball have developed for casual play. Competitive basketball is primarily an indoor sport played on carefully marked and maintained basketball courts, but less regulated variations are often played outdoors in both inner city and rural areas. You wouldn't be wasting your time. Even if all the other girls could care less, it is really about bettering yourself. What if you want to play in High School and your team is full of girls who played in 8th grade. You will wish that you had, also. You have to play as much as you can. And if it you that is carrying your team on your shoulders, someone will notice and it will benifit you down the line. Good luck. Answered by emeedee1 - Sat Jul 21 22:08:43 2007 How often should a basketball fake a pass or a shot in playing basketball? Q. I was playing many years back. A teen from middle school said kids don't fake shots anymore that is old skool and that they would just block it. On a old Larry Bird training tape he said about faking often. So how important are fakes in the game of basketball? How often should we fake? Is faking the ball very important these days in basketball? How often should a basketball (player) use a fake pass or shot when on offence? Asked by Mercer - Sat Jun 5 07:34:06 2010 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. a well executed shot fake on a jumper, pump fake under the basket, or ball fake on a pass will work probably 80 - 90% of the time, and by "work" I mean get the defender off balance or out of position so you can make a play. Defense, by its nature, is reactionary, and it's difficult for defenders to train themselves not to react on well executed fakes. That's why guys who like to steal the ball will almost always "bite" on a good pass fake, and guys who like to block shots will almost always bite on a good pump fake. you can call it old-school if you like, but it works very well. there's no rule as to how often you should attempt one of these, it depends on the situation. Answered by Ten G - Sat Jun 5 11:27:18 2010 How is basketball today different from basketball from the past?
Q. This is urgent, I might come across as irresponsible and such but I have a concise report due tomarrow on basketball and I really don't know much neither can I find much. SO can someone please tell me how basketball from today differs from basketball from then of the past. And if you can, please mention a player, coach, ref., etc might have made an impact on basketball, and if you do please mention what she/he did. Please be specific :p haa, Asked by Barbara, - Sun Mar 1 23:08:54 2009 - - 13 Answers - 0 Comments A. Before was more of a finesse game, now is much more physical and grueling since the goal is to make the more easy close range shots that you can. Now the average height of the players is a minimun of 6'3 in many cases. In the past someone 6'3 was considered a big man of at least a forward. The skill level of players today is off the charts and that's the reason why I think many players are so underrated because to shine in a league today with so many talent is just too diffucult as well as winning a Championship. Many people don't realize that. Players that have made a big impact are : Bill Russell, John Havlicek, Jerry West, Earl Jones, George Gervin, Dr. J., Larry Bird, Magic Johnson , Wilt Chamberlain, Kareen Abdul Jabbar, Shaquille… [cont.] Answered by Espectro - Sun Mar 1 23:22:58 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "basketball" |
