Australia ( / ə ˈ s t r eɪ l j ə / ə-STRAYL-yə or / ɒ ˈ s t r eɪ l j ə / o-STRAYL-yə, or / ɔː ˈ s t r eɪ l i ə / aw-STRAY-lee-ə), officially the Commonwealth of Australia, is a country in the Southern Hemisphere comprising the mainland of the Australian continent (the world's smallest), the island of Tasmania and numerous smaller islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Neighbouring countries include Indonesia, East Timor and Papua New Guinea to the north, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and New Caledonia to the northeast and New Zealand to the southeast. For at least 40,000 years before European settlement in the late 18th century, Australia was inhabited by indigenous Australians, who belonged to one or more of the roughly 250 language groups. After sporadic visits by fishermen from the immediate north and discovery by Dutch explorers in 1606, Australia's eastern half was claimed by Britain in 1770 and initially settled through penal transportation to the colony of New South Wales, founded on 26 January 1788. The population grew steadily in the following years; the continent was explored and an additional five largely self-governing Crown Colonies were established during the 19th century. On 1 January 1901, the six colonies became a federation and the Commonwealth of Australia was formed. Since Federation, Australia has maintained a stable liberal democratic political system and is a Commonwealth realm. The population is 22 million, with approximately 60% concentrated in and around the mainland state capitals of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. The nation's capital city is Canberra, in the Australian Capital Territory. A prosperous developed country, Australia is the world's thirteenth largest economy. Australia ranks highly in many international comparisons of national performance such as human development, quality of life, health care, life expectancy, public education, economic freedom and the protection of civil liberties and political rights. Australia is a member of the United Nations, G20, Commonwealth of Nations, ANZUS, OECD, APEC, Pacific Islands Forum and the World Trade Organization. From Wikipedia under the

But i don't know the difference between Australia rules football and rugby. Help! Asked by Competitivedancer4life - Tue Mar 10 20:25:45 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. Australian Rules Football is a sport, requiring tremendous skill and athleticism. Rugby is a group of incredibly fat men, carrying an incredibly fat football, waddling down an incredibly fat paddock from one end to another. Then, for reasons no sane person can understand, they do a belly-whacker in the mud. Answered by Philip Mayron - Tue Mar 10 20:51:34 2009 How did humans make their first appearance in Australia? Q. Hello everyone, I am from Uruguay. My name is Saul. I have a doubt about your origins. You people from Australia, how do the first ancestors get into that Island? The country of Australia is in the middle of a huge ocean so, centuries ago there were no people in the country, when people started to migrate to other regions they walked. So how those people cross the ocean to get into Australia? Asked by Saul G - Thu Oct 8 14:27:53 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. -- Human habitation of Australia is estimated to have begun between 42,000 and 48,000 years ago. These first Australians may have been ancestors of modern Indigenous Australians; they may have arrived via land bridges and short sea-crossings from what is now Southeast Asia. Most of these people were hunter-gatherers, with a complex oral culture and spiritual values based on reverence for the land and a belief in the Dreamtime. The Torres Strait Islanders, ethnically Melanesian, were originally horticulturalists & hunter-gatherers. The first recorded European sighting of the Australian mainland was made by the Dutch navigator Willem Janszoon, who sighted the coast of Cape York Peninsula in 1606. During the 17th century, the Dutch charted… [cont.] Answered by Charles K - Thu Oct 8 14:42:14 2009 What are some reasons to suggest that Australia is NOT a nation of imitators?
Q. Australia is always being accused of imitating other big countries of the western world, such as england and americas "fast food tradition". But what are some reasons to suggest that Australia is not an imitator, but rather a country of inovation. Asked by Catherine - Sun Apr 25 22:43:01 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Australia may imitate others where that particular action or thing suits it or its people. As a nation, however, Australia punches well above its weight when it comes to innovation, invention and international relations.. Where else is there a nation of some 30 million people in an area almost as large as the continental United States that is one of the leading economies on the planet. We've saved lives, won wars and led the way for others. See my source for the list of inventions Australians have been responsible for.
