Magazines, periodicals, glossies or serials are publications, generally published on a regular schedule, containing a variety of articles, generally financed by advertising, by a purchase price, by pre-paid magazine subscriptions, or all three. Magazines can be distributed through the mail; through sales by newsstands, bookstores or other vendors; or through free distribution at selected pick up locations.

What are short story magazines looking for in a short story?
Q. I have read these magazines, sent away for writing guidelines but my stories are still being rejected. They never give feedback and I am beginning to wonder if my stories worth writing. I read a number of writing magazines and have a degree in English Lit. Where am I going wrong? Some of the stories I have read in the magazines a re rubbish! Thanks to all three of you for your advice and thanks for the web link, Karina.

A. I don't think there's an easy answer. Sometimes the story just might not fit with the editor's view of the magazine's "vision". Or - and please don't take this personally - your story might not be up to par. In my opinion, the best "guideline" to writing good short stories is to read, analyze and learn from great short stories. A Norton Anthology of Short Stories would be a great place to begin. Also, keeping a journal really helps hone your skills. Whatever you do, don't give up writing!

What agency censors magazines and other printing materials?
Q. I know the FCC censors tv and film, but are they the same agency that censors magazines, video games and books?
Asked by kayakyen - Wed Feb 13 04:25:04 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No, usually books and magazines are censored by the publishers due to pressure from private groups. There is no government organization that censors any written materials (at least in the US), but private groups try to all the time.

What are some good magazines to publish short stories in?
Q. I've written a few short stories, I want to know what kind of magazines I can get them published in. I don't really care if they offer payment although that would be a bonus. not anecdotes.

A. The top magazines are the New Yorker and the Atlantic Monthly in terms of payment and prestige. If you're looking for smaller markets or the full range available, I suggest you find a copy of "Novel & Short Story Writer's Market" published by Writer's Digest Books at any bookstore or library.
