Whitewater is formed in a rapid, when a river's gradient increases enough to disturb its laminar flow and create turbulence, i.e. form a bubbly, or aerated and unstable current; the frothy water appears white. The term is also used loosely to refer to less-turbulent but still agitated flows.. We are vacationing in colorado in August, and we plan on going on the Royal gourge whitewater trip, which is Class III-IV rapids. We are 27 and we both can swim and are in decent shape. We are not daredevils but is this trip going to too much for us or is it basically fun and not too hard for the inexperienced rafters. Should we just stick with the Class I-II rapids? You will be fine. I lived in that area for several years. And in the late summer months the water will not be flowing as fast. Certainly fast enough to have a good experience though. And where you are going is in fact a very scenic float/rafting trip. If going with a guide, they will have the appropriate lifejackets. Rafting companies use different raft sizes depending on the water level or volume. You may also consider rafting when the water levels are highest if you really want 'challenge'.
