Whitewater is formed in a rapid, when a river's gradient increases enough to disturb its laminar flow and create turbulence, i.e. form a bubbly, or aerated and unstable current; the frothy water appears white. The term is also used loosely to refer to less-turbulent but still agitated flows.. The term "whitewater" also has a broader meaning, applying to any river or creek itself that has a significant number of rapids. The term is also used as an adjective describing boating on such rivers, such as whitewater canoeing or whitewater kayaking.. RapidsFour factors, separately or in combination, can create rapids: gradient, constriction, obstruction and flow rate. Gradient, constriction and obstruction are streambed topography factors and are relatively consistent. Flow rate is dependent upon both seasonal variation in precipitation and snowmelt and upon release rates of upstream dams.. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Beginner going on a Colorado whitewater rafting trip? Q. We are vacationing in colorado in August, and we plan on going on the Royal gourge whitewater trip, which is Class III-IV rapids. We are 27 and we both can swim and are in decent shape. We are not daredevils but is this trip going to too much for us or is it basically fun and not too hard for the inexperienced rafters. Should we just stick with the Class I-II rapids? I liked the Royal Gourge route cause it goes under the suspension bridge. Any tips are greatly appreciated. Asked by Longhorn - Tue Feb 12 16:14:56 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. You will be fine. I lived in that area for several years. And in the late summer months the water will not be flowing as fast. Certainly fast enough to have a good experience though. And where you are going is in fact a very scenic float/rafting trip. If going with a guide, they will have the appropriate lifejackets. Answered by Truth Seeker - Wed Feb 13 11:47:58 2008 What is the most difficult/challenging whitewater rafting run open to the public around west PA /WV? Q. We are looking for the hardest run we can go on - we live in Ohio. Asked by Bob N - Tue Aug 19 09:55:24 2008 - - 3 Answers - 1 Comments A. Commercial services use equipment that minimizes the difficulty of Grade V or less runs. You can maximize a difficult/challenging run by using a smaller raft than the commercial service uses. Rafting companies use different raft sizes depending on the water level or volume. You may also consider rafting when the water levels are highest if you really want 'challenge'. Some rivers close their runs during peak water levels but boaters sneak in! Answered by g_steed - Tue Aug 19 14:46:48 2008 What mountain in British Columbia is better? Whitewater or Revelstoke? ?
