Tennis is a sport usually played between two players (singles) or between two teams of two players each (doubles). Each player uses a racket that is strung to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt past a net into the opponent's court. The modern game of tennis originated in the United Kingdom in the late 19th century as "lawn tennis" which has heavy connections to various field/lawn games as well as to the ancient game of real tennis. After its creation, tennis spread throughout the upper-class English-speaking population before spreading around the world. Tennis is an Olympic sport and is played at all levels of society at all ages. The sport can be played by anyone who can hold a racket, including people in wheelchairs. The rules of tennis have not changed much since the 1890s. Two exceptions are that from 1908 to 1960 the server had to keep one foot on the ground at all times, and then the adoption of the tie-break in the 1970s. A recent addition to professional tennis has been the adoption of electronic review technology coupled with a point challenge system, which allows a player to challenge the line (or chair) umpire's call of a point. Tennis enjoys millions of recreational players and is also a hugely popular worldwide spectator sport, especially the four Grand Slam tournaments (also referred to as the "Majors"): the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. Q. I was just on YouTube and looked at various tennis matches starting with 1990 and going up to 2000. It appears that around 1994/95 tennis shorts started getting longer. But it was mainly newer players that were wearing them, specifically I noticed Sampras and Agassi. Players who were still around from the 80s were still wearing fairly short shorts. Agassi started the trend of going away from all white, if I'm not mistaken. Does he also deserve credit for the length of shorts? Asked by Wahl - Thu May 14 19:19:39 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Nike/Agassi get credit for busting up the real short shorts of the 1980's. During the 1990's, US men still actually had a big time group of good tennis players (Agassi, Sampras, Courier, etc...). Rafael Nadal was the one to introduce the clamdigger. I've never seen a man wear clamdiggers before him, on or off, a tennis court. Answered by Tortuga - Thu May 14 19:24:13 2009 What is the minimum height required to become a tennis player? Q. I'm really determined about becoming a tennis player. I'm really full of talent in tennis playing and have very good skills. My height is only 4'10 at the age of 12 now. Do you think i can become a tennis player? At this rate will i reach at least the minimum height needed? I really will appreciate your answering me to this question I've been pondering over for many days. Thanks! Asked by A_S_D - Sun Sep 27 09:42:03 2009 - - 12 Answers - 0 Comments A. You can be a tennis player no matter what height you are. All you need is to be good at tennis. And you will still grow alot if your only 12. Just keep playing tennis alot and make sure you eat properly. Answered by Simon P - Sun Sep 27 09:47:34 2009 How do I make tennis shoes fluffy and soft after they sort of harden?
Q. I stepped in some water while washing an automobile and when my shoes dried they sort of got hard instead of flexible and soft. What can I do? Will washing and drying them in the dryer work? Sometimes when you wash tennis shoes and don't dry them they dry kind of hard. Maybe the dryer might help? Asked by Myron S - Sat Dec 1 12:45:38 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. If they are the basic canvas shoes, yes, wash & dry. Add fabric softener or fabric sheet and don't use hot dryer. It is best to take out of medium heat dryer before completely dry & allow to finish dry on the feet. This will also prevent toes giving appearance of curling upward.
