Bicycling, also called cycling or biking, is the use of bicycles as a means of transport, a form of recreation, or a sport. It is done on roads and paths, across open country or even over snow and ice (icebiking). This sport can be performed with unicycles (unicycling), tricycles (tricycling), quadricycles (quadricycling), and other similar wheeled human-powered vehicles (HPVs) Bicycles, the most common form of cycle, were introduced in the 19th century and now number about one billion worldwide. They are the principal means of transportation in many regions. Bicycling is a highly efficient mode of transportation [2] and optimal for short to moderate distances. Compared to motor vehicles, bicycles have numerous benefits including using renewable energy, generating no air pollution, reducing traffic congestion, minimizing noise pollution (nearly silent operation), providing exercise, easier and less costly parking, much lower likelihood of causing a fatality, high maneuverability, ability to travel on roads or special paths, and lower user cost as well as societal costs (negligible damage to roads, and less pavement required).[3] Criticisms and downsides to cycling commonly include: reduced protection in crashes (including those with motor vehicles), longer travel time (except in densely populated areas), no inherent protection from poor weather, inability to transport passengers, the physical demands of operation, and perspiration in hot weather or on long climbs. From Google News Search: "Cycling" Is cycling at home is good for diabetics? Q. I am diabetic and have been advised minimum 4 km brisk walk every day. Due to cold, instead of going for a walk I am cycling at home (exercise cycle). Will it be ok. Pl advice Asked by vk_manga - Wed Jan 30 00:40:35 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. Yes, that is quite acceptable. The idea is to increase the heart rate and demand for glucose by the cells. Exercise of any kind is good for a diabetic, especially a type 2 diabetic. By increasing the demand for glucose and insulin, you help the cells remember what it is they are supposed to be doing with what. In some cases exercise can help you get things in control enough to eliminate the need for supplemental insulin or cut down the dosage of medication. So cycling for the equivalent of 4km would be just fine. Just do it at as brisk a pace as you can. My father swaps between the treadmill and cycle himself, and it's allowed him to halve his medication dosage. Answered by The mom - Wed Jan 30 00:47:32 2008 How long does cycling finish? Q. I am totally confused with the cycling concept. In order for cycling to work - you need to have a fish in the tank so that ammonia will occur and therefore bacteria colonies will form. Is this what cycling all about? If it takes months and months for cycling to be completed - then that poor fish would undergo "stress" due to the rising of ammonia level and pH fluctuation. Asked by jimmy - Wed Jul 25 00:58:26 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. You are well on the right track. It is refreshing to see someone who not only has a partial knowledge of the nitrification process, but also the desire to learn more and the compassion to the fish who will have to live through the process. There are two common methods used to 'cycle' a f/w aquarium: With fish and fishless. With fish, it is the wastes produced by the fish which feeds the nitrosomas and nitrosonomas. (Those are the bacteria involved.) With Fishless, it is with pure ammonia directly added to an aquarium with water and equipment only. For detailed discussions on both please follow the links below. With fish: Fishless: Hope this helps! Jason C Answered by Jason C - Wed Jul 25 01:16:50 2007 Im new to cycling ive recently bought a road bike and want to start training. I want a varied training?
Q. programme. I dont really want to build my legs though as they are quite big already. I am more interested in definition/weight loss. Can anybody suggest the frequency of training/milage i should be doing? Distance or hills? And does anybody know of any good cycling web sites with training tips on etc? Many thanks in advance..:) Asked by grizwold10 - Tue Mar 18 05:16:30 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. This is easy. Get your heart rate up high (80% of max) for as long as you can stand it and spin, spin, spin. Don't ever mash: shift to a lower gear and spin. Hills, flats...doesn't matter, just spin. And in case I didn't mention it before: spin. Distance is the key factor. Staying on the bike long enough to burn fat reserves builds definition and makes for true lasting weight loss. Remember: spinning builds lean muscle (mashing builds bulk). Performance's web site has a good training section and Bicycling magazine devotes about half its pages to training in the spring issues.
