What is an excellent university for aviation?
Q. If someone wanted to go to like the Harvard of aviation where would that be? I am sure if you go there you are automatically like the best pilot or like very admired? What do you do if you are a pilot from one of these universities? I forget to mention that, not part of the air force more into commercial aviation. Like a test pilot or stuff. Like the pilots which frst fly the 787-8 when it comes out. I am sure they are very well educated where did they go?

A. If you want to be a test pilot, don't go to Embry Riddle. Either join the service, or get an engineering degree from a college that doesn't have the stigma ERAU has. You'll need to complete test pilot school after gaining some quality flight experience. The requirements for the civilian test pilot program are Pilots: a minimum of 750 hr of pilot-in-command time and a bachelor's degree (or equivalent military academy) in math, science or engineering I would expect most enrolled have a lot more than 750 hrs. Completing these would also give you the possibility of applying for an astronaught position down the road as well.

What are 5 new or upcoming avionics technologies in corporate aviation?
Q. Corporate aviation tends to lead the airlines where technology is involved and I'm just trying to get a sense of where avionics such as ADS-B and glass panels are going. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Asked by Alex - Sat Jun 13 11:54:11 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The ones that really stand out to me are synthetic vision and enhanced vision systems. Synthetic vision is basically like having google earth built into the pfd. Rather than just showing a simple horizon, it shows terrain, obstructions, navaids, and airports. It is integrated with TWAS to show terrain that may pose a thread. Enhanced vision is forward looking infrared. An infrared camera can see through clouds (usually, but not always) and darkness. This reduces the chances of accidents resulting from runway incursions, and improves safety with low visibility instrument approaches. Beyond those I am not aware of many significant advances in avionics that have not been widely adopted by airlines.

Aviation refers to flying using aircraft, machines designed by humans for atmospheric flight. More generally, the term also describes the activities, industries, and regulatory bodies associated with aircraft.

  • When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return.
  • No bird soars too high, if he soars with his own wings.
  • Pilots take no special joy in walking. Pilots like flying.
  • The way I see it, you can either work for a living or you can fly airplanes. Me, I'd rather fly.
  • Pilots are a rare kind of human. They leave the ordinary surface of the word, to purify their soul in the sky, and they come down to earth, only after receiving the communion of the infinite.
  • If God had intended us to fly, He would have given us wings.
    • Anonymous proverb. Note that many humorous variations have been made from this, replacing the second half of the sentence with things such as, "He would have given us more money" or "He would have bought us the tickets" or in the quixotic commentery of Michael Flanders, "he would have given us railways".
  • If God had intended us to fly, he wouldn't have invented Spanish air traffic control.
